Posted at 7:14 PM PDT on May 20, 2011@ Mike P - It kinda makes sense because Froning's second week workout was very low (relative to the top guys) in the world but not in the region. I'm assuming the region ranking is based on individual rankings in the region which is contrary to what was originally stated but makes sense logically. So because Froning just edged out Dan in 4 or 5 Wods but lost drastically in one he falls in the world because there are so many places between them on that one Wod but in the region there are few enough for him to take the lead. Take the following example:

It’s slightly exaggerated to the think that almost 100 people outside of the two athlete’s regions will fall in between them but it illustrates how there can be such a discrepancy. Athlete two would have a higher world rank because of the WOD 6 finish but a lower region ranking because the scores were tighter in the region. It’s a problem you can’t really avoid if you want to break up into regional scoring but I think more transparency in the ranking system would avoid confusion.
